Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect during my first visit?

Your first appointment usually includes a detailed discussion about your health and medical history, questions about your symptoms and lifestyle, a personalised treatment plan and your first acupuncture treatment (where appropriate). First appointments are typically longer than follow-up sessions.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your condition, how long you've had it, and your overall health. Acute problems may improve in just a few sessions, long-term conditions often benefit from a course of treatment. Some people choose occasional maintenance treatments to support ongoing wellbeing. Your practitioner will discuss a recommended treatment plan after your assessment.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a treatment that involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. It has been practised for thousands of years and is used to support wellbeing and help manage a variety of health concerns. Modern research suggests it may influence the nervous system, circulation, and the body's natural pain-relieving mechanisms.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most people are surprised by how comfortable acupuncture feels. The needles are extremely fine—much thinner than those used for injections. You may feel a slight tingling, warmth, heaviness, or dull ache, which is considered a normal response to treatment.

What conditions can acupuncture help with?

People seek acupuncture for many reasons, including: Back, neck and shoulder pain, joint pain, headaches and migraines, sports injuries, stress and anxiety, sleep problems, digestive concerns, women's health and fertility support and general wellbeing. Your practitioner will discuss whether acupuncture may be appropriate for your individual needs. It is not a replacement for emergency or essential medical care.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes. When performed by a properly trained practitioner using single-use, sterile needles, acupuncture has an excellent safety record. Minor bruising or slight soreness at needle sites can occasionally occur but usually resolves quickly.

Are the needles reused?

No. Every needle is sterile, individually packaged, used once only, and safely disposed of after treatment.

What should I wear?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing whenever possible. Many acupuncture points are located on the arms and legs, so clothing that can be rolled up is ideal.

Should I eat before my appointment?

Yes. We recommend having a light meal beforehand and staying well hydrated. Avoid arriving on an empty stomach or immediately after a heavy meal.

Can I drive after acupuncture?

Most people can drive home safely afterwards. Occasionally people feel deeply relaxed or slightly tired, so if this happens it's sensible to rest before driving.

Is acupuncture suitable during pregnancy?

Acupuncture may be appropriate during pregnancy when provided by a practitioner experienced in treating pregnant patients. Please let us know if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant before your appointment.

Can acupuncture be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Acupuncture is often used alongside conventional medical care, physiotherapy, chiropractic treatment, massage, and other healthcare approaches. Always let your practitioner know about any medications or treatments you are receiving.

Are there any side effects?

Most people experience no side effects. Occasionally you may notice mild bruising, temporary soreness, slight tiredness and/or feeling deeply relaxed. These effects are generally short-lived.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Before your visit, eat a light meal, drink water, wear comfortable clothing, bring details of any medications and bring any relevant scans or medical reports if applicable.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly without a referral. However, if you have a complex medical condition or are under specialist care, we may recommend that you also keep your GP informed.

How do I book an appointment?

Booking is simple. You can book online, call our clinic or send us a message through our contact form. If you're unsure whether acupuncture is right for you, we're happy to answer your questions before you book.
